Learning how a court works can be very beneficial especially at a young age since you can develop advanced skills when people are still learning the basics. This week I was able to research how the court executes a successful trial. During the research, I discovered attorneys have to present opening statements and closing statements. This information made me nervous because I am not the best public speaker, and for this reason, I decided to start practicing opening and closing statements with past trials. Practicing multiple different trials will make me confident and therefore a better public speaker. Later on in my research, I discovered how appeals work for criminal cases. I knew how the appeal process worked for civil cases but in a criminal case, the government is the plaintiff and can not appeal a trial. I previously thought that the government could appeal a trial if they found new evidence on the case, but that only calls for a retrial and not an appeal to the appellate court. A retrial is just the same trial being executed again just with new evidence being admitted to the court. The information from this week helped me clear up what I need to know in the future as I advance in my research in law.
